Team day out with a difference

Not only does volunteering benefit the community, but it can also offer personal and professional development opportunities – and team bonding.

Fidelity Life’s seven-strong Retention team spotted just such an opportunity. As a team, Arlene, Debbie, Richard, Tofik, Rogan, Tessa and Nicolas had already done great work over the past year supporting customers. But instead of resting on their laurels they decided to go a step further.

The cornerstone project of the Ronald McDonald House Charities NZ is the four Ronald McDonald Houses. Each year the Houses care for thousands of families of children undergoing hospital treatment in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

With families often arriving emotionally and physically exhausted – and many not knowing how long they will be there for – the Ronald McDonald Houses give children and their whanau much needed family space and support during a difficult time.

So the team recently chose to spend a day helping in the Ronald McDonald House Auckland kitchen, preparing meals for families staying at the House.

Arlene, our Business Retention Manager, says of their experience:

“Our team took on the task of making various soups that could then be frozen and used when families arrive outside of normal meal times. We ended up filling 18 ice cream tubs with the variety of soups we had made.”

“We also helped Ronald McDonald House sort and re-pack the huge amounts of donations received from companies. By the end of the day it was a very organised treasure trove!”

“We got the opportunity to engage with some of the awesome staff and volunteers, as well as some of the parents. Everyone was so appreciative of our efforts and we found it a very humbling, rewarding experience. It certainly puts life in perspective when you see what young children and their families have to endure.”
